Monday we reviewed what we knew about Aztecs, read "You Wouldn't Want To Be An Aztec Sacrifice," and made homemade tortillas for dinner. We drank Aztec Hot Chocolate for our bedtime treat. The boys- typical males- were really interested in the weapons the Aztecs used. Our book showed how they used obsidian to line their axes and arrowheads. As it worked out, I had picked up bags of various types of rocks at some time in the past from a clearance sale with the thought we'd use them for science. It was perfect for our lesson today. I was able to give them each a piece of obsidian rock. They tried breaking their rocks and both could see how the edges could be sharpened into a dangerous weapon.
We moved on from the Aztecs finally and started our study on the Incas of Peru. We read the book "You Wouldn't Want to be An Inca Mummy" and then watched the Nova movie "Secrets of Lost Empires: Inca." They really were fascinated by the suspension bridges and how they were made. We started making an Inca artifact for art. We are reading Secret of the Andes this week.
Boybarian 3 is also memorizing the 2-digit state abbreviations for spelling.
Both boys have been working on the writing through Writing Strands. It seems to be going well. Because boybarian4 has struggled so much with just learning to read and all things language arts, this is the first time we've attempted any formal writing. I've found if we discuss the objective and then let him illustrate the picture first, it helps him to focus his thoughts. It was his idea but it definitely was a good one!
