Weeks 5 and 6: Mexico

We have enjoyed our visit to Mexico.

Our library system has had some great resources. We love the Schlessinger Media series and watched Mexico for Children. Other videos we used to learn the past 2 week s include Desert Giant by Reading Rainbow, and Bill Nye the Science Guy on Deserts.

We also found this great online resource to watch past episodes of The Magic School Bus for free. The boys really enjoyed the one for Desert Biomes.

In Window on the World we read about Cuba. We checked out many of the books from the library recommended in the teacher manual, but their favorite was Hill of Fire. We made a lapbook of Mexico and included a mini layer book on character traits from the book. I loved that this resource included applying those traits to a Christian/Biblical perspective. The boys illustrated their geography cards on deserts and dunes (we are a bit behind on this activity), and wrote letters on Friday.

We made a pinata for our craft. The lesson for mom and dad: Plan a little better. The pinata is still drying but we are hoping to have it painted and decorated for our fiesta of fajitas with homemade tortillas this weekend. **Update: Pilot Guy decided to have them just spray paint it with some quick dry black and brown paint. They glued on some tissue paper decorations. We let them have fun while thunder and lightening was off in the distance. We decided to get it over with before the rain. It was a hit! The older boys watched and grabbed some candy/gum too.

Adios Amigos... we're heading to Canada on Monday.
